A structural shift in thinking about data within Indian urban governance is needed. Sriram Gutta and I write in the World Economic Forum’s global agenda on how data can play an important role in India’s response and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 highlighted the devastating effects brought about by information gaps in the areas of public health, transportation and the protection of migrants. To overcome such issues, formulating long-term systematic city data collection policies in India is key.
